Our top 3 picks for the 2020 Netherlands Film Festival

From September 25th until October 3rd, the Netherlands, and in particular, Utrecht will be all about Dutch cinema. Because The Netherlands Film Festival is having a very special edition this year. They are celebrating their 40th anniversary, and they are hosting their first hybrid festival: going online, going to cinemas, and going throughout the whole country. 

Once again, they have created an extensive program full of films, talk shows, and masterclasses – all of them are available online. There are 8 festival premieres in 97 cinemas in 66 cities throughout the Netherlands. Besides, their Professionals Program is completely online as well, they will host 6 masterclasses, 1 conference day, more than 30 talks, and events with over 50 speakers.

Since you cannot miss this year’s edition of NFF, we have listed 3 must-sees for you.

1. Festival premiere: Kom hier dat ik u kus

A tragicomic film adaptation of the successful novel of the same name by Belgian writer Griet Op de Beeck. The main character of the story is Mona. She tries to make the best of life, but that’s not easy for her. Scarred for life by the early death of her mother, she tries to hold her own. Until she realizes that it can’t go on like this anymore.

2. Dutch classics in a drive-in cinema

In honor of their 40th anniversary, they present the exclusive program ‘Alle40Goud’. This program contains 40 films, selected by the audience, which have been awarded with a Golden Calf since the first edition of the festival in 1981. Most of these films will be shown online and if you have the opportunity: check them out at the NFF Drive-In Cinema in Utrecht.

3. NFF Debut Competion: De ontmoeting - kutleven

This short film (7 min.) is one of the 21 nominees for the City of Utrecht Film Award. The film tells the story of Madelief, who comes home from her world trip and is the first to find her dead cat. Why did she actually go on a trip? What should she do next? As the independent jury of the NFF Debut Competition states: “Kutleven is a beautiful directorial debut by Isis Cabolet, who clearly has a talent for comedy”.
